Post Weight Loss

Life after weight loss

Weight loss is a tremendous accomplishment that has numerous health benefits. However, once you have reached your weight loss goal, your body may not appear as fit and healthy as you would like. Skin can be loose and sagging, and some patients find that their body shape looks incongruous. If this is the case for you, consider surgical body contouring at Intermountain.

Breast lift after massive weight loss

After weight reduction surgery or substantial weight loss, the skin and tissues often lack elasticity, having lost their ability to conform to a smaller body size. Skin that was once stretched out becomes unsupported, causing it to sag. In the breast area, this causes flattening, sagging, and downward-pointing nipples. Our surgeons correct sagging, flattened breasts using a breast lift. This can be done in conjunction with other post-weight loss procedures such as tummy tuck or arm lift.

Post-weight loss Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, Arm Lift, Butt Lift

Common body contouring surgical procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, arm lift, butt lift, and thigh lift are particularly beneficial for patients who have achieved dramatic weight loss. We can remove excess fat and skin from nearly any part of the body, improving the tone of your body for a more smooth and natural body contour. Tummy tuck, liposuction and other body contouring procedures can help you further improve your confidence in your appearance.

Tummy Tuck

Pregnancy or extreme weight loss can often result in excess skin of the abdomen.  Because the abdominal muscles are spread apart, they cannot produce a tight abdomen.  A flat and well-toned abdomen is something that many of us strive for through exercise and weight control.  When these methods are not enough to help us achieve our goals, the surgeons at Bel Air Center can help.

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) may be an option for you if:

  • You are healthy and at a stable weight.

  • You have reasonable expectations for your post-surgical appearance.

  • You do not smoke.

  • You are uncomfortable with and/or bothered by the appearance of your abdomen.

An abdominoplasty is an effective method to tighten your stomach muscles and remove excess protruding or sagging skin.  Abdominoplasty creates a flatter, tighter abdomen. Your surgeon will meet with you and discuss whether or not you are a candidate for a successful abdominoplasty procedure.  Depending on your needs, your surgeon may recommend a full or partial “mini” abdominoplasty.

The full abdominoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 3-5 hours.  An incision is made near the pubic area from hipbone to hipbone.

Great care is taken in planning the placement of the incision to optimize body proportion and to minimize visibility of scars—permitting a variety of apparel options.  Your surgeon will work to repair abdominal muscles, remove excess skin and rebuild the navel.  Once the surgery is complete, the incision will be sutured and drains will be temporarily placed to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.

After your recovery period (which typically takes between two to four weeks) you can expect to return to normal activity - with the absence of your pooching, drooping belly!  Scarring can take nine months to a year to flatten out and lighten and color.  Although abdominal scars will never completely disappear, they will not be visible under most clothing—including bathing suits.

Arm Lift

The arm lift procedure, also called a brachioplasty, removes loose skin and fat from the upper arms. This is done through liposuction and in some cases through surgical removal of extra skin as well.

Our surgeons recommend an arm lift when the skin tone of the upper arm is poor and patients have a significant amount of extra skin to be removed. This is commonly done after significant weight loss as the skin will not shrink on its own. An arm lift can also reduce the folds of skin and fat on the upper chest near the armpit. Patients who have undergone an arm lift benefit from a more youthful appearance and a thinner arm contour. The incision left by an arm lift procedure is often completely concealed within the armpit or on the inside of the arm in an inconspicuous location. Downtime is minimal with an arm lift, and it can be combined with other body contouring procedures.

Neck Lift

The neck is often the first part of the body to show signs of aging.  Patients bothered by: excess fatty deposits under the chin, loose “jowly” skin, or abnormal neck banding in the neck may find improved definition through a neck lift.  A neck lift is a procedure designed to give better definition to the neck line, lessen wrinkling, and can help people showing the earliest signs of aging as well as senior patients who want to improve their appearance with a relatively minor procedure.

Patients who have lost an excessive amount of weight may also be good candidates for this procedure.

The goal for neck lift surgery is to redefine the jawline, reduce wrinkling, and remove abnormal or sagging tissue.  Neck lift surgery is performed under general anesthetic.  Your surgeon will make a small incision under the neck as well as incisions behind the ear.  During the surgery, excess skin and fat will be removed, the platysma muscle will be tightened, fat may be scultped and/or redistributed, and the entire area will be elevated and tightened.

This operation is performed in a surgical center or hospital under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss expected outcomes, possible complications, and which method is best for you at your consultation.

Thigh Lift

The thigh lift procedure, also called an inner thigh lift or thighplasty, is used to tighten loose hanging skin over the thighs and upper knees. This procedure reduces excess skin and reshapes the thighs. It drastically improves the contours of the thighs and lower body. It also helps to smooth the skin.

There are several methods for thighplasty surgery. An inner thigh lift is best for individuals with a moderate amount of skin and fat, and the incision is hidden in the groin fold. A vertical thighplasty has an incision from the groin crease to the inner knee, and the surgeon removes a wedge from the inner thigh. This is best for those with more significant amounts of skin and fat. An outer thigh lift is the most extensive and the incision starts at the groin and goes around the hip.

This procedure is common after massive weight loss, since excessive skin on the thighs is common. It may also be ideal for people whose thigh tissue has begun to sag significantly over time.
